Schiphol and KLM have started using the world's first fully automatic, double passenger bridge. With this innovation, a double passenger bridge is automatically connected within a minute. This contributes to a shorter time between arrival and departure of the aircraft, in which every minute counts. The chance of malfunctions or damage due to operating errors is also reduced.

The fully automatic passenger bridge will be used on the F-pier by KLM and its Skyteam partners for intercontinental flights. The automated passenger bridge will be tested in the running airport operation of Schiphol until the end of 2019. Then a decision is made about further roll-out at the airport.

The airport has developed the automated passenger bridge in collaboration with bridge supplier CIMC-TianDa, the Dutch high-tech company Sioux Technologies and KLM. The passenger bridge is equipped with smart technology, where cameras on the bridge recognize the door of the aircraft. The bridge can then connect itself to the door of the aircraft using sensors. A KLM employee activates the bridge and keeps an eye on things.
